Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - Early Start Programme.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

131 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Education if she will include De La Salle boys primary school, Dundalk, County Louth, in the Early Start Programme from September 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11966/95]

I am aware that the school in question has applied for inclusion in the early start pre-school programme. Unfortunately, this school is not among those selected for inclusion in the early start programme from September next.

Decisions on the selection of locations for the pre-school projects are taken after consultation with the relevant health authorities and having regard to the range of pre-school activities already in place in an area. A key consideration in the selection process is the level of social disadvantage in an area. Locations are selected on the basis of priority of need. The needs of the area mentioned by the Deputy will be considered in the context of any further expansion of the programme.
