Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Debt.

Ivor Callely

Question:

105 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance Ireland's total national debt for each of the years 1977, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993. [11961/95]

The information sought by the Deputy, as at each year-end, is set out in the following tabular statement. It should be noted that the national debt figure for 1977 is calculated on a different basis from the figures for 1983 and subsequent years. This arises from changes which were made in the method of calculation in 1987 under which circular transfers resulting from the enactment of the Local Loans Fund (Amendment) Act, 1987 were eliminated and a deduction in respect of liquid assets was introduced. The figures for 1983 and subsequent years have been calculated on this amended basis. For comparative purposes, the Deputy may wish to note that the national debt figure for 1982 under the old method of calculation was £12,817 million, while the corresponding figure on the amended basis was £11,669 million.
