Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Famine National Memorial.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

3 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Taoiseach the consideration, if any, he has given to suggestions from the Western Development Partnership Board for a national memorial to the Great Famine to be located in the west of Ireland; and when a decision will be made. [12924/95]

As you know in January last I was appointed chairperson of the inter-departmental Committee on the Commemoration of the Great Famine and 1798 replacing my predecessor Deputy Tom Kitt.

On 4 August last I had advertisements placed in the national press inviting members of the public to suggest locations for a National Monument to the Famine. The closing date for the receipt of suggestions is 1 October 1995. Many suggestions have been received in response to the advertisement, including the proposal by the Western Development Partnership Board referred to by the Deputy. When all the suggestions have been received, they will be carefully examined by the Famine Commemoration Committee and myself and I hope to be in a position to announce a decision before the end of the year.
