Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Post.

Tony Gregory

Question:

191 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if she has received a submission from O'Connell's Primary School, Dublin 1, for a remedial teacher; and her response to the request in view of the need for additional remedial work in this inner city school serving a disadvantaged community. [12718/95]

My Department has received a submission from the school in question seeking the allocation of a remedial teacher post.

Earlier this year, I allocated an additional 55 remedial teacher posts to the primary sector bringing the total number of such teachers now in place in the primary sector to 1,188 These appointments were made on the basis of priority of need following the collection of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate. Unfortunately, O'Connell's Primary School was not successful on this occasion.

However, I am pleased to inform the Deputy that the school in question is one of a small group of schools which have been selected to participate in a pilot scheme aimed at addressing particular problems presented by disruptive pupils. As part of this arrangement, the school has been allocated a special counsellor teacher post to assist ordinary teaching staff in dealing with the pupils in question.

I will be keeping the question of further need for remedial teacher posts under review and the needs of all schools, including O'Connell's Primary School, will be considered in this context.
