Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme.

Tony Gregory

Question:

218 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the reason for the reduction in places in the vocational training opportunities scheme; and if she will review the situation in Dublin in order to allow an additional 20 places in a vocational education committee school (details supplied) in Dublin 1 to allow a metal sculpture course to proceed in view of the fact that there were 120 places in September 1994, and there are only 94 places at present. [13075/95]

Seán Haughey

Question:

222 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education if she will confirm that her Department has instructed vocational education committees not to establish new vocational training opportunities scheme courses; if the CDVEC has cancelled the vocational training opportunities scheme course at the North Strand Vocational School, Dublin 3, in metal sculpture; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that this has caused anger among those students accepted for this course; if she will reverse this decision; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13123/95]

Micheál Martin

Question:

242 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the exact amount of money saved by the decision not to provide 1,000 additional places on the vocational training opportunities schemes in autumn 1995. [13309/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 218, 222, and 242 together.

As part of a package aimed at achieving savings necessary to meet Government requirements in 1996 for the curtailment of public expenditure, the question of limiting the number of places available on VTOS in 1996 arises. An indication has been given to vocational education committees of what their allocations are likely to be for 1996.

It is a matter for the vocational education committees to utilise the number of places available to them having regard to demand and local priorities and circumstances. In this context the City of Dublin vocational education committee indicates it is not in a position to start the new course mentioned in the first two questions above. It also indicates that it is allocating 95 places this autumn to the centre concerned which had 106 participants in the 1994-95 academic year.
The estimated saving to the Exchequer on 1,000 VTOS places in 1996 is £2.5 million. It will be appreciated that the number of places available to VTOS has increased substantially in the last three years.
