Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Ecstasy-Related Death.

Tom Kitt

Question:

287 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Justice when she will publish the report into the investigation of the ecstasy-related death of a young man at the rave event at the Point Depot and the alleged sale of drugs at this venue on the night in question; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13055/95]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the tragic death of the young man is to be the subject of a coroner's inquest shortly. The coroner is independent in the exercise of his functions and, as such, it would not be appropriate for me to make any further comment. The Garda investigation file into a number of incidents including the alleged sale of drugs at a dance event in the Point Depot on 24 June 1995 has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. However, no directions from the director's office have been received to date.

With regard to dance venues in general, the Garda will be availing of opportunities during September when dance licences come up for renewal to object in court to licences where there is evidence of drug abuse, sale etc. on the premises. I am also examining dance hall legislation, which is very out dated, with a view to amending such legislation.
