Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Complaints by Dublin Residents.

Tony Gregory

Question:

292 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if the gardaí are repeatedly called to a location (details supplied) in Dublin 10; the approximate number of such nightly calls from local residents made to the gardaí; if it is the view of the gardaí that the bollards at this location facilitate gangs of youths congregating there where they cannot be pursued by Garda cars which causes misery to local residents, mainly elderly; and if the gardaí will recommend that the bollards be removed as recently requested at a Neighbourhood Watch meeting. [13124/95]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that they are aware of the complaints of local residents about the unsocial behaviour of certain youths at the specific location mentioned and also in the area generally. I have also been informed that approximately 20 complaints are made to Ballyfermot gardaí weekly in respect of the general locality, which comprises several streets and includes the junction in question.

As regards the bollards at this location, this is primarily a matter for the local authority, but I have asked the Garda to liaise with them about it.

In the meantime the situation will continue to receive attention from the Garda at Ballyfermot who will take whatever operational measures are necessary to deal with this problem.
