Question:

340 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the results of all tests carried out to establish the incidence of use of angel dust in this State in each of the years 1993 to 1995; the number and location of tests: the attempts, if any, that have been made to interfere with the testing procedures or to remove evidence; and if he intends to extend testing in the future. [12725/95]

(*To September, 1995)
Samples are taken from farms, meat factories and distributors throughout the State; analysis is carried out at laboratories situated in the Dublin area and in County Tipperary.
No attempts to interfere with the analysis process have been encountered. However, attempts have been made to frustrate the efforts of my Department by moving treated animals and carcases or by intimidating officers.
Ireland carries out a higher level of testing of clenbuterol than any other member state. I can assure the Deputy that I intend to continue using every means at my disposal to stamp out the use of this illegal substance. I am confident that those engaged in abuse are a small minority and that the vast majority will join me in condemning those who attempt to sabotage our valuable beef export trade.
My Department is currently examining proposals to further extend the level of testing with a view to confirming the residue free status and wholesomeness of Irish Beef.
