Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Genocide in Rwanda.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

17 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has raised at EU level the alleged involvement of France in the horrific genocide committed in Rwanda as reported in a recent television programme (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12927/95]

I am aware of the allegations concerning the supply of arms made in the course of the programme to which the Deputy refers and of the subsequent strong denial of these by the French Government.

Ireland opposes the supply of arms from any source which would have the effect of exacerbating hostilities in situations of strife. This has guided our policy in relation to Rwanda. Within the EU framework, we have raised our concerns about the supply of arms to Rwanda in discussions with our partners on appropriate occasions and will continue to do this.
I can assure the Deputy that the Government is making every effort to assist the search for peace and national reconciliation for all the people of Rwanda.
