Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Drug Treatment Facilities.

Seán Haughey

Question:

89 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health the drug treatment facilities available in the Eastern Health Board area; if he has satisfied himself with the level of service provided; the plans, if any, he has to decrease the waiting lists for detoxification treatment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12931/95]

Limerick East): At present the drug treatment facilities available in the Eastern Health Board are: the National Drug Treatment Centre in Pearse Street; three satellite clinics, located in Amiens Street, Baggot Street and Ballyfermot; a ten bed detoxification unit in Beaumont Hospital; another ten bed detoxification unit in Cherry Orchard Hospital (opened in July 1995); three community based drug teams; rehabilitation facilities; methadone being prescribed by GPs to approximately 400 drug users.

While I am concerned about the numbers on the waiting lists for treatment, I am satisfied that my officials in consultation with the Eastern Health Board are working to improve the situation. Three new satellite clinics, due to open later this year and the ten bed detoxification unit which opened in Cherry Orchard Hospital will significantly reduce the waiting lists.
The position will continue to be monitored to ensure that services for persons affected by drug misuse are provided as necessary.
