Vol. 456 No. 2

Written Answers. - PESCA Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

92 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine the reason County Mayo was not included in the PESCA scheme. [13671/95]

The PESCA programme is a European Union-funded Initiative being implemented by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) on behalf of the Department of the Marine. The programme is part of the European Union's response to structural changes in the fishing industry, and provides aid for a range of measures intended to assist diversification within the industry or into other activities. PESCA covers all coastal counties and will run until 1999. The number of projects assisted in any particular county will of course depend on the number and the suitability of the applications received from promoters in that county.

A proposal by the Belderrig Development Association in Foxford, County Mayo, was among the twenty-two projects which have so far been approved for funding under the PESCA Initiative. This project aims to carry out a feasibility study on the development of Belderrig Harbour for marine tourism. It will cost over £18,000 of which almost £10,000 will be contributed by the Exchequer and the European Union.
