Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fraud Advisory Committee Report.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

123 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice her views on the Government-commissioned report from the Advisory Committee on Fraud under the chairpersonship of Mr. Peter Maguire SC. [13861/95]

I regard the report of the Advisory Committee on Fraud as an excellent basis for improving the deterrence, detention and punishment of fraud and I am actively engaged in translating its recommendations into action.

Earlier this year I established the National Bureau of Fraud Investigation, one of the major recommendations of the report and staff are currently being recruited. In addition, I am also drawing up proposals for comprehensive changes in the law on fraud, and dishonesty in general, based on recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Fraud and the Law Reform Commission. The work is well advanced and I hope to bring my proposals to Government later this year.
