Question:

31 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of staff currently employed by the Department of Social Welfare; and the breakdown of the overall number by type of employment and location. [13971/95]

The number of posts filled in the Department at 1 September 1995 was 4,376. Of these, 2,022 are located at 94 centres in eight regions around the country. There are three decentralised headquarters functions in Sligo, 408 staff, Letterkenny, 173 staff, and Longford, 175 staff. There are also 73 branch offices run on a contract basis by non-civil servants.

A breakdown of the number of staff by location and the work on which they are engaged is given in a tabular statement which will be made available to the Deputy.

Sligo: The Pensions Services Office is responsible for the administration and control of long term social assistance and social insurance schemes relating to old age pensioners, lone parents, deserted wives, widows/widowers and orphans, together with related free schemes within the social security system.
Letterkenny: The Letterkenny office is responsible for the administration and control of the Child and Treatment Benefit schemes.
Longford: The Longford office is responsible for administration and control of social assistance and social insurance schemes relating mainly to Invalidity and Family Support.
Regional Structure:
The regions are responsible for the day to day control, administration and delivery of services to the unemployed, for the provision of information on social welfare schemes, the registration of disability claims and for liaison with voluntary agencies and community groups.
Social Welfare Appeals Office:
This office is responsible for determining appeals against decisions of the Department in relation to Social Welfare entitlement.

North Eastern Region: Cavan; Louth; Meath; Monaghan.
South Eastern Region: Waterford; Carlow; Tipperary SR; Kilkenny; Wexford.
