Vol. 456 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Fuel Scheme.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

40 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Social Welfare the plans, if any, he has to review the operation of the fuel allowance scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13945/95]

The national fuel scheme assists householders on long term social welfare or health board payments and unable to provide for their own heating needs. At present, a payment of £5 per week is paid to eligible households for 26 weeks, from mid-October to mid-April.

An additional smokeless fuel allowance of £3 per week is available to assist people living in the built up areas of Dublin and Cork to help meet the additional costs arising from the ban on the sale of bituminous coal in these areas.

The scheme was amended in the context of the 1995 budget. With effect from 16 October 1995, the amount of additional means disregarded will be increased from £5 to £10 and the limit for personal savings will be increased from £2,800 to £5,400.

It is my intention to undertake a review of the scheme to ensure it is operating effectively and equitably. This review will commence at the earliest possible date.
