Vol. 456 No. 4

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Robert Molloy

Question:

57 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if she will authorise the payment of third level education grants in respect of a person (details supplied) in Galway. [13985/95]

Galway County Council is the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the higher education grants scheme in this case. The student in question entered third level education in 1992 and his application for grant aid was considered under the higher education grants scheme 1992, the scheme applicable in his case. Galway County Council has deemed him ineligible on the grounds that the applicant did not meet the academic attainments specified in the 1992 scheme.

When the matter was examined on appeal by my Department I came to the decision that the ruling of the local authority was correct. The case was subsequently appealed to the Ombudsman who upheld the earlier decisions.
