Vol. 456 No. 4

Written Answers. - Appeals Against Decisions.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

70 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of appeals against decisions that his Department received in 1994; and the total number of applications allowed and disallowed. [13975/95]

During 1994, 13,504 appeals were received by the social welfare appeals office against decisions made by deciding officers of the Department. In the same year, 14,971 appeals were resolved.

Of the 14,971 cases resolved, deciding officers were in a position to revise their earlier decisions in 2,946 cases in the light of new evidence arising from the appeals process. All such revised decisions were favourable to the persons concerned.

Determinations were made by appeals officers in 10,358 appeals, of which 5,117 were allowed in full or in part and 5,241 were disallowed. In the remaining 1,667 cases, the appeal was not pursued by the person and the case with withdrawn.

In summary, 8,063 or 54 per cent of appeals were decided in favour of appellants, 5,241 or 35 per cent were disallowed and 1,667 or 11 per cent were withdrawn. This and other related data is to be found in the 1994 report of the chief appeals officer which was published recently.
