Vol. 456 No. 6

Written Answers. - Local Employment Service.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

53 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the further plans, if any, he has to establish an advisory committee to monitor the new local employment service; and if he recognises the difficulty for the local employment scheme in handling all types of job opportunities in the absence of a national minimum wage. [14480/95]

An interdepartmental advisory group consisting of representatives of relevant Government Departments/State Agencies has been set up to advise me on the establishment and ongoing implementation of the new local employment service. While I am conscious of the difficulties that will be faced by local management committees with regard to the task they are taking on, I am heartened by the approach that is being proposed in the plans I have received so far and am confident that this new service will have a real benefit in terms of its impact on the employment opportunities of unemployed people. However, I do recognise that no single measure in itself can solve the problem of unemployment.
