Vol. 456 No. 7

Written Answers. - Live Cattle Trade.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

42 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if external marine consultants are being engaged to work with his Department to inspect ships for the live cattle trade; the number of consultants he expects to be engaged; when they will commence work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11522/95]

Following a recent review of arrangements for transporting cattle to the Middle East, I have appointed external marine consultants to assist officers of my Department and of the Department of the Marine in the process of approval of ships. To date, three consultants have been appointed but this number may be increased as and when the need arises. The work commenced on 13 June last. Fees in respect of ship inspections are payable by the ship owners concerned.
