Written Answers. - Community Service Orders.

Question:

58 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Justice the number of community service orders handed down by the courts in the latest period for which figures are available; and the nature and level of resources in the probation and welfare service and elsewhere which are set aside for the supervision and operation of community service orders. [14769/95]

The Criminal Justice (Community Service) Act, 1993, has been in operation since 5 December 1994. The following are the number of orders made in each year since the Act came into operation:

The nature and level of resources set aside for the supervision and operation of the community service orders scheme is as follows: 21 probation and welfare staff; six clerical officers; other probation and welfare staff when required, as part of their overall workload; £715,000 is provided in the current financial year to enable sessional supervisors to be engaged on a part-time basis to assist officers in ensuring the work is undertaken satisfactorily. Part of the allocation is to provide for equipment and other operational requirements.
