Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - Attacks on Irish Trawlers.

Godfrey Timmins

Question:

54 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Marine if he will consult with his Spanish counterpart in order to ensure that there is no recurrence of the attacks on Irish trawlers fishing for tuna in international waters this summer. [11747/95]

I am glad to say that there were no reported incidents of friction between Irish and foreign vessels fishing for tuna in international or Irish waters during the 1995 season. This can be largely attributed to the increased surveillance in the fishery by the European Union and by our own Naval fishery protection vessels.

In addition, as a result of recent discussions between the Taoiseach and the Spanish Prime Minister, enhanced arrangements are being put in place to ensure ongoing liaison between our respective fishery authorities on all matters of fisheries concern.
