Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Anthem.

Derek McDowell

Question:

63 Mr. D. McDowell asked the Taoiseach his views on whether a change of national anthem is desirable; whether he further believes that such a change would assist in the peace process; and the procedures that should be followed in commissioning and putting in place a new anthem. [14817/95]

Amhran na bhFiann was written in 1907 and formally adopted as the National Anthem in 1926.

In the context of the peace process I am not aware that the question of a change of anthem is an issue of core concern.

I am having the position regarding the required procedures for the commissioning and putting in place of a new anthem checked to see if any exist and I will advise the Deputy as soon as the relevant information if available.
