Vol. 457 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cross-Border Checkpoints.

Brendan Smith

Question:

40 Mr. B. Smith asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will pursue the need to remove the permanent vehicle checkpoints at Mullan, Gortmullan and Wattlebridge on the Cavan-Fermanagh border with the British Authorities, particularly in view of Minister of State Ancram's reply to Deputy Brendan Smith at the recent British and Irish Interparliamentary body meeting. [14011/95]

As I indicated in my reply to the Deputy on this matter last June, the Government wishes to see normal traffic conditions restored at all Border crossings as soon as possible. The recent announcement that ramps and barriers would be removed at two crossings near Derry and one near Strabane is to be welcomed. In my view, a speedier programme aimed at removing all remaining Border vehicle checkpoints is now called for and I have made this point again to the British authorities at yesterday's meeting of the InterGovernmental Conference.

I note what Minister of State Ancram said at the recent meeting of the British Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body in Cardiff and I will continue to press for the early removal of remaining vehicle checkpoints, including those at Mullan, Gortmullan and Wattlebridge.
