Vol. 457 No. 3

Written Answers. - Credit Union Charge.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

101 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on credit unions being allowed to introduce a service charge to cover the cost of operating a new range of services. [14924/95]

As the Deputy will be aware, credit unions in Ireland are a particular form of Industrial and Provident Society which are registered and regulated by the Registrar of Friendly Societies in accordance with the terms of the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts, 1893 to 1978, with particular emphasis on the Credit Union Act, 1966. Most of these mutual societies are also affiliated with the Irish League of Credit Unions, which has standard rules to be adopted by its member unions and provides various support services for them. It is unclear from the Deputy's question whether he is referring to services envisaged under new legislation currently being drafted by the Parliamentary Draftsman. Should this be the case, it would not be in order to formally anticipate the terms of a Bill not yet introduced to the Oireachtas. Should the Deputy be adverting to services being introduced by a particular credit union or group of credit unions, it would be helpful if he would elaborate and communicate the perceived difficulties to the Registrar of Friendly Societies who could look into the matter as appropriate.
