Vol. 457 No. 3

Written Answers. - Licensing of Commercial Dog-Breeders.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

105 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he intends to introduce legislation to license commercial dogbreeding establishments, more commonly known as puppy farms; and if in the meantime he will instruct officials in his Department to carry out an investigation into this factory farming of dogs to ascertain if there is a case to be made for banning these establishments from carrying out their business on grounds of extreme cruelty. [15297/95]

The approval and registration of breeding units for supplying animals, including dogs, for experimental and other scientific purposes is a matter for the Minister for Health. I have no plans to introduce controls on the breeding of dogs for other purposes.
