Vol. 457 No. 4

Written Answers. - Devolution Commission

Noel Dempsey

Question:

61 Mr. Dempsey asked the Taoiseach the progress, if any, made to date in relation to the devolution commission; and if he is fully committed to the idea of devolving power to locally elected representatives. [15499/95]

The Devolution Commission has met twice in plenary session and has established two sub-committees to focus on particular aspects of its mandate. The commission has invited a wide range or relevant organisations to make submissions and has also advertised extensively in the national and local press.

I am fully committed to the objective of renewing the local government system according to the principles set out in the Government statement of 4 July 1995. An important aspect of this renewal will be to devolve significant additional functions to local government on a phased basis. Responsibility for the devolution programme has been placed under my aegis, as head of Government, to highlight the priority I attach to the task. The fact that I will chair the Cabinet Committee which will consider the commission's recommendations, is evidence of my personal commitment and interest in this issue.
