Vol. 457 No. 4

Written Answers. - Resort Renewal Scheme.

Joe Walsh

Question:

68 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to include Glengarriff, County Cork, in the traditional resort renewal scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15652/95]

The new renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts commenced on 1 July last for a three year period. The purpose of the scheme is to renew and update the tourist amenities and facilities in a certain limited number of seaside resorts. I would stress that this new initiative is a pilot scheme and is thus of an experimental nature. It must therefore be applied on a limited basis in order to evaluate its efficacy.

Glengarriff was not one of the areas selected for inclusion in this scheme. As the Deputy will appreciate, it is not possible to designate every area of the coast for the purposes of this pilot scheme and until this scheme is firmly established it would seem inappropriate to consider the designation of any further towns.
