Vol. 457 No. 4

Written Answers. - Number of Drug Addicts.

Ivor Callely

Question:

108 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the number of drug addicts in each health board area; the number and location of clinics for drug addicts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15618/95]

Limerick East): Hard data on the number of drug addicts in each health board area is not available. The health research board publishes an annual report on the number of people treated for drug misuse, but this is not a true indication of the number misusing drugs.

At present, treatment facilities for drug misusers are provided at three community drug centres based at Baggott Street, Amiens Street and the Aisling Clinic in Ballyfermot and at the drug treatment centre at Pearse Street. Treatment is also provided by a number of voluntary agencies, including Coolmine Therapeutic Community and the Merchants Quay Project, which are funded by my Department through the Eastern Health Board.
