Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heritage Council Grants.

Tony Killeen

Question:

8 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the grants which have been approved and paid by the Heritage Council in each of the years 1992 to 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15592/95]

The Heritage Council, which I appointed on 10 July 1995 under the Heritage Act, 1995, is an autonomous body whose general functions are to propose policies and priorities for the identification, protection, preservation and enhancement of the physical heritage. The council has powers to provide assistance, including financial assistance, and advice to persons and bodies in matters relating to its functions. The council is funded by way of a grant-in-aid from my Department's Vote. This grant-in-aid is funded from national lottery moneys. In the current year the grant-in-aid to the council is £1,550,000. This includes £500,000 for the discovery programme, which is an archaeological research programme. A detailed list of any grants made by the statutory Heritage Council in 1995 will be published in its annual report for that year.

The predecessor of the Heritage Council was the non-statutory National Heritage Council. Details of projects which benefited from national lottery funding from the National Heritage Council in the years 1993-94 are contained in the Appropriation Accounts for those years. Prior to 1993 moneys for projects in the heritage area were disbursed through the Vote of the Department of the Taoiseach. Details of heritage projects for which national lottery funding was sanctioned and-or paid by the National Heritage Council in the period 1 January 1995 to 9 July 1995, following approval by me, are listed in the following table.

Were the criteria for the assessment of projects set by the Minister's Department or the Heritage Council and are there any proposals to change them?

The Heritage Council is an autonomous statutory body and I understand it is discussing its approach to applications.

Does the Minister propose to have discussions with the heritage division of the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland or the Historic Buildings Council in Belfast with a view to promoting projects which are of importance to the province of Ulster?

That is a different question.

The question asks if the Minister will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy is broadening the scope of the question and he should table a specific question on that issue.

I have had discussions on the issue of co-operation in regard to heritage matters and these will continue.
