Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Driving Licences.

Austin Deasy

Question:

181 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to issue reminders regarding driving licences when people are taxing their cars in view of the number of people whose licences lapse due to an oversight; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16386/95]

While the need to tax motor vehicles arises at least once a year, most driving licences are renewable only once in ten years. It is not feasible under the existing system to issue reminders when licences are expiring. However, a national computerised licensing file is being developed on a phased basis and will be completed in 1999. This will facilitate the issuing of notices to licence holders whose licences are due for renewal.
