Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedical Teacher Posts.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

205 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if she will review her Department's decision not to sanction the approval of a remedial teacher as ex quota to a school (details supplied) in Dublin 8; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the school has over 600 students attending and that it has been funding a remedial teacher from its own resources for the past seven years; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that there is an increase each year in the number of students requiring the extra attention of a remedial teacher; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16062/95]

I approved the allocation of an additional 73 ex-quota remedial posts to second level schools this year. The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need and having regard to existing provision. Regard was also had to the recommendations of my Department's psychological service.

It was not possible to allocate a post to this school this year. The position of the school will be considered when next it is possible to allocate additional remedial posts.

I should point out that this school has been allocated a disadvantaged post and part-time hours in respect of home-school liaison. Additional hours have also been approved for the current school year to cater for curricular difficulties in the school.
