Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Funding.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

220 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education the allocations of the extra provision of £1.5 million in respect of primary schools and £2.1 million in respect of second level schools for the expansion of the caretaking and clerical services during the current year for the Dublin area. [16205/95]

The allocation for both primary and second level schools are being used to cover the full year costs of improvements made to the scheme in September 1994 and to reduce the qualifying enrolment with effect from September 1995. In the case of primary schools the allocation is being used to cover the full year costs of improvements made to the scheme in September 1994 and to reduce the qualifying enrolment for these grants from 350 to 250 pupils with effect from September 1995. Under this latest extension to the scheme an additional 36 primary schools in the Dublin area will receive grant assistance.

As any expansion of the scheme undertaken in September 1995 at second level would have funding implications for 1996, the full extent of the expansion will not be finalised until the budgetary position for 1996 is known. I will advise the Deputy of the position as soon as the matter has been decided.
