Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prisoner Release.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

245 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Justice the basis on which a person (details supplied) in County Galway was released from prison recently; the conditions attaching to his release; the amount of time served by him; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15947/95]

The person referred to by the Deputy was, in October 1994, convicted of a number of offences and sentenced to a total of 22 months detention. He is due for release, with remission, on 24 January 1996. To date he has been approved for one weekend temporary release for re-socialisation purposes, from 20 to 23 October 1995 when he returned on schedule. This release was granted subject to several conditions, including good behaviour and the stipulation that he report to the gardaí each day. Until this parliamentary question was put down, neither my Department nor the local Garda authorities were aware of any suggestion that the prisoner had misbehaved during his weekend temporary release.

I have asked that the matter be further investigated. No further temporary releases will be considered for this prisoner in the meantime.
