Vol. 457 No. 7

Death of Member. - Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputies Smith and Power.

I request that the Standing Orders of the House be suspended to deal with a matter of national importance, namely, the failure of the Government to consult widely with the representatives of the Defence Forces to reach consensus on the reorganisation of the force; the failure to introduce a retirement package; the failure to commence a recruitment drive; the failure to ensure that the force will be adequately equipped for future needs and the failure to disclose the Minister's true intentions with regard to the closure of barracks.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and therefore cannot grant leave to move the motion.
