Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sustainable Development Policy.

Noel Treacy

Question:

64 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for the Environment if there is a national policy on sustainable development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16143/95]

Public policy has, for some years, recognised the principle of sustainable development, which is incorporated in the National Development Plan, 1994-99. My Department has earlier this year published a review document entitled Moving Towards Sustainability which describes a range of relevant actions and policy initiatives adopted in support of sustainable development in recent years.

The Government is committed to the preparation of a national sustainable development strategy which will deal more explicitly and systematically with the requirements of sustainable development in the Irish context and with its implications for all relevant policy areas. Work on preparing the strategy is proceeding at present, and I expect to publish the completed strategy by mid-1996.
