Vol. 458 No. 1

Written Answers. - Allocation of Garda Manpower.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

37 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí relocated from Border areas in view of the continuing ceasefire; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16491/95]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda manpower and resources to individual areas. They have informed me that the strength of Border divisions has decreased by 68 since 1 September 1994. This reduction has been achieved by a policy of not filling vacancies arising from retirements, resignations etc. The gardaí who would normally have filled these vacancies have been assigned to areas of greater need.

I have also been informed by the Garda authorities that the allocation of manpower is kept under constant review with a view to deploying resources to the best advantage and in the best interests of policing.
