Vol. 458 No. 3

Written Answers. - Trade Opportunities.

Michael Woods

Question:

44 Dr. Woods asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade his views on the trade opportunities opening through the usage of information technology and access to the information superhighway. [16860/95]

Information technology is an area with considerable potential for helping to open up opportunities for the marketing and promotion of Irish goods and services. The "Information Superhighway", as it is called, is still developing and various technical problems will have to be overcome before its potential can be fully realised.

An Bord Tráchtála has set up a special task force to guide it on future participation on the Internet, which is part of the Superhighway, by it and its client companies. It has already established a "Home Page" on the system and has developed Internet versions of its "CONNECT IRELAND" databases which will provide interactive information on Irish expertise in the software and environmental areas. ABT also offers to Irish companies an electronic tender information service, known as "Public Procurement Intelligence", on Telecom Éireann's Minitel network.
