Vol. 458 No. 5

Written Answers. - Education Outside Formal Setting.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

124 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education, in view of the fact that some parents, as stated in the White Paper on Education, find satisfaction in nursing a learning environment for their children and do not wish to avail of formal schooling, if she will permit local national schools to benefit from such contribution by listing such children as associate pupils of the school, to enable the school to receive an appropriate capitation grant and an appropriate number of teachers so that by agreement, the children might have access to some of the school's resources and be entitled to a school place when they might wish to avail of one. [17280/95]

I do not intend to introduce whereby children who receive their education outside a formal setting could become associate pupils of their local primary school, nor do I have any plans to change the position whereby capitation grants and staffing levels in primary schools are based on the number of full time pupils only.
