Vol. 458 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Gym.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

135 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education when she will make the necessary financial aid available to build a school gym for a school (details supplied) in Dublin 5 in view of the recent allocation of £12 million for sports halls and recreational facilities. [17357/95]

An application has been received for funding towards the provision of a PE hall for the school in question under the post-primary schools capital programme. Due to the demands on capital resources available, priority has to be given to the provision of essential teaching accommodation. As a result, it is not possible to make funding available at this stage for the provision of a PE hall at the school in question. The position in relation to sports facilities is that, in general, school projects are not eligible for national lottery funding under either the major sports capital programme or the recreational facilities scheme administered by the sport section of my Department. However, a limited number of school sports facilities have been assisted under the schemes where the project is being undertaken by a local community group in co-operation with a school. One of the condition attaching to the scheme is that the completed facility must be available to all sections of the community.
