Vol. 459 No. 3

Written Answers. - Visiting Teacher Service.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

135 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the number of profoundly deaf children who are being dealt with on a home-call basis in County Roscommon; the number of teachers attending these children; and the cost involved. [18098/95]

There are two profoundly deaf children in receipt of a home-call visits from the visiting teacher service.

Three other hearing-impaired children in County Roscommon receive visits from the visiting teacher service in their respective schools, with occasional follow-up visits by the teachers to their homes.

The service in question is delivered by two visiting teachers as part of their overall case-load which would also include other children in the Roscommon area.

Based on the overall cost of delivering the service in County Roscommon, it is estimated that the cost of the service to the five children mentioned above is in the region of £14,000 per annum.
