Vol. 459 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Teachers for Travellers.

Paul McGrath

Question:

130 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the enrolment numbers required in primary schools for the appointment of a special teacher for travellers or an additional special teacher for travellers; and if absentee levels are taken into account when sanctioning any new appointments. [18787/95]

The pupil teacher ratio for special classes for traveller children is 14:1. The ratio in question was reduced by one unit in September 1995.

Applications for the establishment of special classes are considered by reference to the number of special needs children enrolled for the two previous quarters. In considering such applications, regard is also had to the level and duration of absenteeism among the pupils concerned.
