Vol. 459 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sea-Erosion Scheme.

Tony Killeen

Question:

184 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has to introduce a scheme of grant-aid for land owners undertaking works to combat sea erosion. [18783/95]

I have no plans for setting up any scheme of this nature.

The protection of private property and the mitigation of damage to it from any source are primarily matters for the landowner. At present the only moneys available for coast protection works are £5.2 million under the Environmental Services Operational Programme 1994-99. As they are inadequate for dealing with all eligible projects to protect public infrastructure, I am continuing to seek additional funding for this purpose.
