, Limerick East): There are no statistical data on the number of people misusing ecstasy but reports available indicate that the level of abuse is increasing and is of major concern. This is also borne out by the increased number of seizures made by the gardaí and Customs services.
The uncertainty as to the precise formulation of the ecstasy drug taken can present serious difficulties in the treatment of abusers. I am satisfied, however, that all boards are well equipped to deal with the medical problems caused by ecstasy.
My priority with regard to the misuse of ecstasy is to put extra resources into primary prevention, through education and awareness campaigns. Information and education are the most important weapons in the fight against the misuse of drugs. Young people need to be informed of the dangers of ecstasy, but they also need to be equipped with the skills to avoid turning to drugs as a means of coping with life. The preparation of a media campaign to be launched early in the new year, is also at an advanced stage in my Department.
