Vol. 459 No. 7

Written Answers. - Trinity College.

Albert Reynolds

Question:

107 Mr. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education the total funding provided in 1994 and 1995 by the Exchequer for cleaning the exterior of Trinity College, Dublin; the amount, if any, of EU funding received; whether she proposes to continue with the programme as originally envisaged, on foot of a pledge given on behalf of the Government during the quatercentenary; and whether she will request the authorities of Trinity College to floodlight the front courtyard, both inside and out in view of the taxpayers' money involved, in order to highlight one of Dublin's most central and famous civic buildings. [18871/95]

A total grant amounting to £1,000,000 has been made available by my Department to the Higher Education Authority in 1994 and 1995 in respect of cleaning and repairing the external facade of Trinity College, Dublin. No EU funding was received for this work.

Further grant-aiding of this project, including the question of the provision of floodlighting, will be considered by my Department in the context of available resources following consultation with the Higher Education Authority.
