Vol. 459 No. 7

Written Answers. - Carlow Courthouse Renovations.

M. J. Nolan

Question:

120 Mr. Nolan asked the Minister for Justice the estimated cost of phase one and phase two of the renovations to Carlow courthouse; the body responsible for phase one and two; the actual out-turn; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18876/95]

Phase one of the Carlow courthouse project which was mainly roof repairs was undertaken at my Department's request by Carlow County Council employing both their own personnel and outside contractors. The sum of £107,500 was reimbursed to the council by my Department for this work.

Phase two which included major internal refurbishment to the two courtrooms, jury room, judges rooms, legal practitioners room, circuit court offices, provision of consultation rooms, victim support room, probation and welfare room and toilet facilities, was undertaken by my Department. The final costings for this phase are not yet available but are in the region of betwen £500,000 and £600,000.

The next phase which will include refurbishing the district court offices, provision of a family law suite, staff tea room and toilets and the installation of a lift is at the initial planning stage and is dependent on the accommodation currently occupied by the caretaker being made available. No definite costings for this phase of the works are yet available.
