Vol. 459 No. 7

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

180 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the ongoing problem of coastal erosion in Inver village, County Donegal; and the funding, if any, that is available in his Department to address the problem. [18857/95]

The Operational Programme for Environmental Services provides £5.2 million for coast protection works over the period 1994-99. To enable me to select projects for inclusion in the programme each maritime local authority was asked to assess its own needs and to list them in priority order. Donegal County Council did not include Inver in their list of priority projects.

I am aware that the local development committee in Inver has carried out some work using voluntary labour and now seek to have a rock revetment constructed to protect their efforts and to extend the wall. If Donegal County Council wishes to revise its priority list to include this project I will be in a position to consider it for inclusion in future years of the coast protection programme.
