Vol. 459 No. 7

Written Answers. - Representation on Governing Body.

Robert Molloy

Question:

38 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education her views on the fears expressed in relation to outside representation on the Governing Body of Trinity College, Dublin, that its relationship with Northern Ireland and Great Britain will be compromised; and the way in which she can allay such fears. [18761/95]

I do not believe the fears expressed in the Deputy's question are justified. As the Deputy will be aware, I published a Position Paper on Proposals for University Legislation on 27 November 1995.

The Position Paper sets out a careful and balanced approach to the implementation of Government policy, as contained in the White Paper on Education published last April. This policy includes broadening the representation of the governing authorities of universities to include representation from the wider communities served by universities.
In the preparation of the Position Paper, my Department was assisted by the advice of the Heads of the various universities, including the Provost of Trinity College. This advice was given in their personal capacity. My Department listened very carefully to the advice and has sought to take full account of the advice in relation to the particular needs of the universities, including Trinity College.
All the institutions, including Trinity College, now have an opportunity to consider the position paper. I am confident that such consideration will allay the fears referred to in the Deputy's question.
