Written Answers. - Bereavement Counselling.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

50 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the need for bereavement counselling in schools; the proposals, if any, she has to provide such a necessary resource; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18659/95]

I recognise the need for counselling in schools, including counselling in relation to personal and social issues, as well as vocational and educational matters. Bereavement counselling is one of a number of the aspects of personal counselling which is important.

In recognition of the need for counselling. I made provision for an additional 100 guidance teacher posts for second-level schools in 1995. In all, the provision for such posts has improved from 359 in 1992-93 to 567 in the current year. In addition, I have initiated a pilot scheme for the introduction of teacher-counsellors in 27 primary schools.
The in-career development unit of my Department has supported a number of courses on bereavement counselling for school guidance teachers. This unit is prepared to consider further applications for support for such training. Other developments, such as supporting home-school links, have a special relevance for developing a sensitivity in schools in relation to bereavement.
The Chapter in the White Paper,Charting Our Education Future, dealing with the role of schools in promoting the social, personal and health education of students, stresses the value of a supportive schools climate within which account is taken of pupils' personal needs. The Health Promoting School Project, which is under way already, seeks to implement this policy.
