Vol. 460 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Centre for Physically Handicapped.

John Browne

Question:

54 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Health the extent of the involvement, if any, of the Eastern Health Board in the running of a centre for the physically handicapped (details supplied) in County Wexford; the qualifications of the personnel operating the centre; the involvement, if any, by any other Government agencies in the running of the centre; if the centre is being run to the required standards; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1529/96]

I understand that the centre in question proposes to provide services primarily for people with a mental handicap.

I understand from the Eastern Health Board that officials from the board had discussions with the centre in question with a view to the agency providing services for persons with a mental handicap from the Eastern Health Board region. The centre intends to provide a comprehensive independent living skills programme, which will include a small horticultural-agricultural programme and the restoration of the mill with a view to providing traditional stone ground flour.
The use of this facility by the Eastern Health Board's clients is still under consideration. I understand from the board that, as a first step, the references and credentials of the people involved in the project are being checked by them.
The Eastern Health Board has also informed me that the project has the support of the NRB, FÁS, the Garda juvenile liaison scheme and the Irish Agricultural Museum. As is the practice in the case of other similiar voluntary agencies, the board's officials will monitor the services being provided to any clients who may be placed by them with the centre.
