Question:

66 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Education the awards or prizes given to second-level students in recognition of special achievements in State examinations by her Department, other State agencies and teaching or parent associations at national level; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1500/96]

The scholarships and prizes awarded on the basis of my Department's certificate examinations each year are outlined in the appendices to the rules and programme for secondary schools which is published each year. The scholarships and prizes are divided into two broad categories; those awarded directly by my Department, and those awarded by other agencies such as subject associations, professional or cultural institutions, and individual benefactors. Brief details of the scholarships and prizes are attached. More detailed information is available in the rules and programmes for secondary schools.

Details of the scholarships and prizes.

The scholarships awarded directly by the Department of Education are as follows:

—Easter Week 1916 Commemoration Scholarships

—University Scholarships for students from the Gaeltacht

—Scholarships to pursue certain degree courses through Irish in University College Galway

Other scholarships and prizes, of which there are 28 categories, are as follows:

1 Bord na Gaeilge/Department of Education joint venture to award prizes for the most meritorious performance in Leaving Certificate Irish Higher Level

2 Prizes awarded by the French Government for French at Junior and Leaving Certificate level

3 Prizes awarded by the German Government for German at Junior and Leaving Certificate level

4 Prizes awarded by the Italian Cultural Institute for Italian at Junior and Leaving Certificate level

5 Cervantes Prizes awarded by the Spanish Cultural Institute for Spanish at Junior and Leaving Certificate level

6 James A. Sweeney Medal for Greek answered through the medium of Irish at Leaving Certificate Higher level

7 Institute for Chemistry of Ireland Medal for Leaving Certificate Chemistry Higher Level

8 Institute for Physics Medal for Leaving Certificate Physics Higher Level

9 Peter Killian Memorial Medal presented by the Association of Teachers of Music in Post Primary schools for Leaving Certificate Music Higher Level

10 Gwenda Hurst Memorial Medal presented by the Association of Geography Teachers of Ireland for Leaving Certificate Geography Higher Level
11 Association of Teachers of Home Economics Medal for Leaving Certificate Home Economics Higher Level
12 Business Studies Teachers Association medals and prizes for Leaving Certificate Business Organisation, Accounting and Economics, all Higher Level, and Junior Certificate Business Studies Higher Level
13 History Teachers Association Plaque for Leaving Certificate History Higher Level
14 John Murphy Memorial Medal presented by the Engineering Metalwork Teachers Association for Leaving Certificate Engineering Higher Level
15 Association of Woodwork Teachers Award for Leaving Certificate Construction Studies and Technical Drawing Higher Level
16 Institute of Mathematics Award for Leaving Certificate Mathematics Higher Level
17 Burke Memorial Prize in memory of the late Thomas Henry Burke (1829-1882), Under-Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. A prize based on Junior Certificate results is awarded annually. The prize is confined to children of persons who are or have been in receipt of salary paid out of money voted by the Oireachtas, or derived from rates or taxes
18 Earl of Cork Scholarships for boys and girls are awarded on the results of the Junior Certificate. Candidates for the Scholarships must have been educated in the county of Waterford
19 West Waterford Brigade Old IRA Memorial Scholarship awarded on the results of the Junior Certificate to a pupil who resides in the Brigade area
20 SIPTU Scholarships based on the results of the Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate reserved for children of members
21 Tyndall Medal awarded by the Carlow Scientific Council to the candidate obtaining first place in Science subjects in the Leaving Certificate in all County Carlow schools
22 Jimmy Smyth Perpetual Trophy presented by Dundalk Urban District Council for Junior Certificate Art for candidates attending Dundalk schools
23 Cork Schools Science Awards Committee Medals for students in Cork city and county who achieve first place in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics Higher Level respectively in the Leaving Certificate
24 Michael Snoddy prize awarded by Carlow Branch of Conradh na Gaeilge to the candidate from a Carlow school who gave the most meritorious performance in Leaving Certificate Irish Higher Level
25 Cork Chamber of Commerce Education Awards for candidates in the Cork city catchment area for Leaving Certificate Accounting, Business Organisation, Economics, French, German, English, Higher Level
26 Jack McGlone Memorial Award presented by the Business Studies Teachers Association for Junior Certificate Business Studies Higher Level
27 Jack Henderson Memorial Award presented by the Classical Association of Ireland for Junior Certificate Latin or Greek or Classical Studies Higher Level
28 Kevin B. Nowlan Prize presented by the Combined Departments of History, University College Dublin, for Leaving Certificate History Higher Level
