Vol. 461 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Alcohol Policy.

Helen Keogh

Question:

77 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Health the current status of the report on a national policy on alcohol being drawn up by a committee appointed by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2906/96]

The Advisory Council on Health Promotion was requested by the Government in 1989 to develop a national alcohol policy. A working group subsequently initiated a consultative process and a report was prepared on the basis of submissions and presentations made to the working group.

The report has been considered by my Department in the light of current issues with regard to alcohol policies, including a number of studies undertaken by the World Health Organisation and a draft national policy on alcohol is now almost finalised.
